The Background of our Youth
Vulnerable young adults from rural Rwanda's poorest households.
We don't screen youth because we believe in every young person's potential.
When enrolling youth into our program, we collaborate with the local government officials, who are best placed to identify youth from the poorest households through their official household database. We enroll youth aged 16-25, with 50.9% men and 49.1% women.
Youth learn from each other regardless of their diverse education backgrounds.
As of 2025, among 450 youth, 11.1% are still in school, 1.8% have graduated from university, 16.2% completed high school, 69.8% dropped out of school, and 1.1% have no formal education.
These young adults unite to learn and grow across the foundations of the Rungano-Ndota core program: Personal Wellness, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Ecosystem Connection.
Among the youth we enroll, some face additional challenges beyond poverty.
Of the 450 Rungano youth, 10% are returning from rehabilitation centers, 16.9% are young single mothers, and 3.6% are youth with physical disabilities. We bring these youth together in Kundwa Groups, where they share experiences and learn from one another in safe, supportive spaces.
